May 6, 2017 – 13th annual run for the water
New 10k Course length! 5K family fun run returns
The Westport Fishermen’s Association thanks all the runners and walkers who came out to support our environmental advocacy work for a clean Westport River and healthy marine habitat at the 13th annual “Run for the Water” at Horseneck Beach on May 6th. Despite the intermittent rain, we had a great turnout with participants coming from ten states. In fact, a woman flew in from Michigan the night before to compete specifically in the 10K. She is doing a race in all 50 states this year and picked the WFA’s event because it supported a good cause. She said, “I really enjoyed the course and meeting some new people along the way. I’m glad I chose this race for my Massachusetts run.”
This year we swapped out the 8K course for a 10K distance and Matt Moussamih from Swansea won it in 40:22. Lauren Galiardi of Cumberland, RI was the women’s winner, coming in at 46:59. Top finishers in the 5K Fun Run were Dan Murphy of Westport and Katie Knapp from Brooklyn, NY. Proceeds from this year’s event will help fund the WFA’s scholarship program and support our advocacy efforts.
After the race, participants feasted on delicious pulled pork sandwiches and fixings courtesy of The Back Eddy. The WFA also thanks the rest of our generous sponsors who donated goods and prizes that helped make this event a success: D/2 Biological Solutions, BayCoast Bank, Westport Rivers Winery, Lapointe Insurance, Westport Chiropractic, Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, Bradshaw insurance, Country Woolens, Even Keel Realty, Westport Chiropractic, Stop & Shop, Crystal Spring Water, Lafrance Hospitality, Panera, New York Bagel, Head Town Landing Country Store, Jason Neiman Photography, and Graphix Plus.
